    Arts, Beats, & Eats 2018

    A little rain couldn't hold us back! We had SUCH a fun time with volunteers at Arts, Beats, & Eats last weekend. We got to see unique pieces of art, eat some amazing food, and dance the night away. A portion of the proceeds from this event will go towards Volunteers of America Michigan social services.     Photos: Holidays of Hope 2017

    More than 200 people gathered for our annual Holidays of Hope fundraiser on Saturday, December 2, coming together on behalf of struggling families, poor seniors and homeless veterans. It is a serious cause, but the event also was a celebration of the generosity of attendees. For the second year, the main event of the night was a chefs challenge, where three chefs competed to create a winning dessert in 30 minutes. Thank you to all who attended and participated.

    Another Capital Area Stand Down for Homeless Veterans is in the books! Thank you to all the volunteers, agencies, donors and participants who made this a great success. This was the 14th Stand Down organized by Volunteers of America Michigan, and the second year we combined the event with Lansing Community Connect. We served hundreds of meals, and connected people with at least 60 agencies. The rain threatened but never materialized. It was a great day!

    Tireless mattress delivery team provides rest for weary

    It is a great achievement when clients move into housing. But most of them start with almost zero possessions, the kind of basic necessities most of us take for granted: Pots, pans, blankets. They often resort to sleeping on the floor, using sheets, swimming toys, blow-up mattresses, even newspapers. That's where this special group of volunteers comes in, delivering mattresses and furnishings to the newly housed.

    MSU basketball player Colby Wollenman helps people connect with medical care

    Colby Wollenman came to MSU from a tiny town in Wyoming, intending only to study pre-med. He ended up as a walk-on to Tom Izzo's basketball team, earning an athletic scholarship and a 3.98 GPA. He also made an impression at the area's largest homeless service center, where he helped Volunteers of America Michigan clients connect with health care through the Sparrow Medical Group clinic on site.

    Coventry Place residents work to recover from fire

    A December 9th fire at Coventry Place apartments in Redford left four seniors homeless and caused significant damage to the apartments and belongings of many others. Volunteers of America's insurance and government agencies will cover the structural damage. However, with very little income and no renter's insurance, many Coventry Place residents will struggle to recover. However, you can help.
