Bryan's story

Your name: Bryan Troyer

Your role at Volunteers of America Michigan: Kitchen Manager for the Call Sam Kitchen for Veterans.

What brought you to this position? To serve veterans and the opportunity to work with the team at VOAMI Detroit to provide a quality meal service program. Also, to assist and support the VOAMI Detroit goal to expand meal services to veterans in the community.

What is your biggest takeaway from working with Volunteers of America Michigan? Opportunity to use my 39 years of experience in the food service industry to serve the veterans on a daily basis. Also the ongoing positive feedback from veterans about the quality of meals/menu being served in the Call Sam Kitchen.

What is your biggest challenge in this position? Limited food storage space and limited food preparation equipment available in kitchen.

Where is your dream vacation spot? In the summer & fall it would be in northern Michigan or boating on the Great Lakes. In the winter & spring it would be St Augustine Beach, Florida.

What is your favorite book? I don’t have a favorite book. When I do read a book, I like non-fiction and books about American history, including great events and people.

How do you spend your time outside of the office? Family (wife and three adult children), spending time on my boat in summer on Lake St Clair, and being outdoors up at my camp in Northern Michigan. I enjoy watching and attending sport events with my favorite being hockey. I also recently completed training and received USCG maritime certification for Master 50 Ton Boat Captain license.
