Your role at Volunteers of America Michigan: Adopt A Family Lead

What brought you to this position? A few years ago, my husband and I were looking for a way to give back during the holiday season when we found Volunteers of America Michigan. We signed up to assemble blankets for seniors in the housing programs and had a great experience. We loved what Volunteers of America Michigan stood for, so we signed up for more volunteer opportunities after that. We even got our kids involved in the efforts. I love knowing that my children are being taught to care for others. We spend a lot of our family time volunteering for different programs and events. My kids love being able to see and stuff backpacks during Operation Backpack® knowing they will be given to other children who are in need. I think it is important to teach them to put others first at a young age so they grow up doing so. They love going to volunteer, they even refer to it as going to see their Volunteers of America Michigan Family.

When the opportunity to be a part of the Adopt A Family program presented itself, I was excited and jumped at the chance to give back on a daily basis during the holiday season.

What is your biggest takeaway from working with Volunteers of America Michigan? Knowing that I can make a small, meaningful, and positive difference in someone else’s life.

What is your biggest challenge in this position? With the Adopt A Family program, there are so many families that really need the help. Reading about their struggles and hardships is really tough, but knowing that the team and I will be putting smiles on so many children’s faces really drives me.

Where is your dream vacation spot? Maldives!

What is your favorite book? “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee.

How do you spend your time outside of the office? Spending quality time with family and friends.
