Your name: Deidra Harris-Thomas

Your role at Volunteers of America Michigan: Director of Human Resources

What brought you to this position? Before I came to Volunteers of America Michigan, I was a Human Resource Business Partner for another company. In this position, I consulted, evaluated, and implemented functions of human resources, accounting, and administrative services departments for contracted client companies. My former position was rewarding, but I was not a part of a cemented team and I missed that. So, I began my job search and stumbled upon the Payroll/Benefits Specialist position at Volunteers of America Michigan. I accepted the position due to the mission of the agency and the growth opportunity that was upcoming. I was very excited to implement our new pay system and was recently promoted to the Director of Human Resources.

What is your biggest takeaway from working with Volunteers of America Michigan? Finding solutions to make the work/life balance effective and efficient for managers and employees.

What is your biggest challenge in this position? Getting our human resources technology fully functional while also revamping the human resources department.

Where is your dream vacation spot? I plan to visit the Maldives within the next five years. Cuba was my last international trip. So really, anywhere warm with lots of cultural aesthetic.

What is your favorite book? The Hunger Games series written by Suzanne Collins.

How do you spend your time outside of the office? I spend lots of time with my family. I also am an avid Harley Davidson rider. I participate in lots of charitable motorcycle rides, community events, and shows.
