Juliana's story

Your name: Juliana Yousif

Your role at Volunteers of America Michigan: Financial Controller

What brought you to this position? I was interested in transitioning from the corporate/auto industry to the non-profit sector. I really wanted to work for an organization that strives to help those in need. When the opportunity finally presented itself, I took it.

What is your biggest takeaway from working with Volunteers of America Michigan? I am honored to work for an organization that upholds the values of caring for others and doing what is needed to help those in need. I am also honored to lead our finance team for Volunteers of America Michigan and work with all our departments to ensure the utmost accurate financial data so that more individuals can get the help they need.

What is your biggest challenge in this position? I would have to say my biggest challenge is seeing grants and other funding get reduced or cut. To some, financials are just numbers, but to me, it’s people who need our help.

Where is your dream vacation spot? I love exploring different countries and cultures. So I do not have a favorite place, but I try to keep my mind open to what will come next and take that opportunity.

What is your favorite book? The first book that comes to mind is “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle.

How do you spend your time outside of the office? So many things… I love exploring new events and places in Detroit. I enjoy going to movies, concerts, the orchestra, opera, hanging out with awesome friends, traveling when I can, and of course dancing.
