Lisa's story

Your name: Lisa Ash

Your role at Volunteers of America Michigan: Support Specialist for Supportive Services for Veteran Families.

What brought you to this position? I wanted to be working with veterans again. I had previously worked with veterans at a different agency with the same style of program. Volunteers of America Michigan appealed to me because they offer so many opportunities for personal growth, as well as countless opportunities to gain skill and knowledge.

What is your biggest takeaway from working with Volunteers of America Michigan? There are great people working hard at the same goal at agencies all around us. Although I do not work directly with veterans in my role I do work with the communities to strengthen services offered to veterans. I also Chair the Region 7 VCAT (veterans coalition action team) Leadership board. We work together as a group of veteran providers to increase awareness for veteran services as well as finding creative ways to strengthen our veteran community.

What is your biggest challenge in this position? Learning the ins and outs of our data systems.

Where is your dream vacation spot? Puerto Rico.

What is your favorite book? “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen R. Covey.

How do you spend your time outside of the office? Coaching cheer and spending time with my kids.
