Bruce's story

Your name: Bruce Johnson, the veterans call me Mr. J.

Your role at Volunteers of America Michigan: Detroit Veterans Case Manager

What brought you to this position? The opportunity to give back to veterans. I had some clinical experience and I was working at a shelter in Ann Arbor as a volunteer when I saw the ad for the case manager position. I researched Volunteers of America Michigan and I was impressed with everything they did. Luckily for me, I got an interview and was hired.

What is your biggest takeaway from working with Volunteers of America Michigan? That everyone deserves love and respect. We meet everyone where they are without judgment. When you sincerely care for and love people, they begin to love themselves.

What is your biggest challenge in this position? The case manager’s role is a great responsibility and there is a lot that we do. Self-care, keeping up my energy up, and staying organized so that I don’t lose my effectiveness are the biggest challenges.

Where is your dream vacation spot? My wife and I love the West coast of Michigan and we try to go as often as we can.

What is your favorite book? I love so many books but since I must choose one, I will say, “To Kill a Mocking Bird” by Harper Lee.

How do you spend your time outside of the office? Spending time with my wife and friends, studying for grad school and photography.
