Denise’s story

Your name: Denise Ward

Your role at Volunteers of America Michigan: Payroll and Benefits Specialist

What brought you to this position? A former co-worker contacted me and told me that a new position was being created at Volunteers of America Michigan and she thought I would be perfect for it. So, I applied for the job. I started at the vehicle donation center in Pontiac and then moved to work in Human Resources after about three years. I will be celebrating 14 years with the organization in April.

What is your biggest takeaway from working with Volunteers of America Michigan? I am blessed to work for an organization that is making a difference in the lives of individuals in the community that are most in need (i.e. homeless veterans, the elderly, struggling families).

What is your biggest challenge in this position? Keeping up with the ever-changing laws and regulations regarding human resources, payroll, and benefits administration.

Where is your dream vacation spot? Anywhere warm and sunny with a beach and crystal-clear water. I’m headed to Aruba in July!!

What is your favorite book? “Bread and Jam for Frances” by Russell Hoban was my favorite book to read to my girls when they were little. Dean Koontz, Nicholas Sparks and Nora Roberts are a few of my favorite authors.

How do you spend your time outside of the office? Spending time with family and friends. I have a deep love of music and singing. I also enjoy movies, bonfires, days at the lake, and just hanging out.
