Maia's story

Your name: Maia Cross

Your role at Volunteers of America Michigan: Human Resources Generalist

What brought you to this position? Three years ago, I was drawn to Volunteers of America Michigan because of the way they served others. After applying, I knew this is where God wanted me to be. My beliefs fell perfectly in line with the mission and I loved that it was a faith-based organization. Now I get to experience first-hand helping a population of vulnerable people – who are often forgotten – not just with a handout but a hand-up through the comprehensive services we offer.

What is your biggest takeaway from working with Volunteers of America Michigan? My biggest takeaway from my job is that we must work together, cohesively, to serve our client population. Sometimes employees experience personal challenges, but during those times we must communicate and support each other to ensure that clients are not negatively impacted.

Where is your dream vacation spot? My family travels to Florida quite a bit because we have relatives there.  Recently, my family and I went to Puerto Rico – that’s my new #1 favorite. However, my dream vacation spot is Hawaii.

What is your favorite book? From 2013 to 2016, my “favorite” books were textbooks as I was working on my masters degree in human resources! My current favorite book is “Becoming” by Michelle Obama. The book truly feels like a conversation that allows the reader to visualize her story.

How do you spend your time outside of the office?  Spending time with my family is very important to me. Both our children are making important transitions next school year – one to high school and one to middle school.  We like to travel, go bowling and, of course, catch the latest Marvel flick!
