A heart for helping
Darius' story

Your name: Darius Harris

Your role at Volunteers of America Michigan: Thrift Warehouse Manager

What brought you to this position? A friend called me and asked if I wanted to work for a company that helps people. I looked up the company to see what they did for the community and found that it was something I wanted to be a part of. So I applied, and now, over 11 years later, I still couldn’t be more happy.

What is your biggest takeaway from working with Volunteers of America Michigan? I think the biggest thing I get to takeaway from my job is I get to work with good and caring people who want to make a difference for people. I’m glad I get to be a part of the good things we do for veterans and the homeless.

What is your biggest challenge in this position? The biggest challenge is not knowing how each week will look. With home pickups, routes, furniture pickups and drop boxes we never know what’s going to happen. But that’s what also makes it a fun and exciting job.

Where is your dream vacation spot? My ideal vacation spot would be someplace out in nature with my wife and kids. Like Fjaðrárgljúfur (or Majestic Canyon) in Southeast Iceland.

What is your favorite book? My favorite book is “The Future of Architecture” by Frank Lloyd Wright.

How do you spend your time outside of the office? Hanging out with my kids, drawing, cooking, relaxing on the couch and watching a movie with the family.
